2019 was a huge year for the Order as we celebrated our Centenary with a range of activities. Plans began back in 2015 as Brother John Campolini was appointed as the Boards Centenary Co-Ordinator and was tasked with organising the main banquet at Supreme Council on the 4th/5th October 2019. The long ‘to do’ list began with inviting Clergy from up and down Great Britain and writing to The Holy Father, Her Majesty The Queen, local Dignitaries in Glasgow, all the Members of The Knights and associate Members such as IACK, CAFOD, SCIAF, CWL, UCM, SVP, SVVP Scotland etc. His team arranged a special Mass at St Patricks Cathedral for Sunday 6th October and continued to update the Order via a regular Countdown newsletter.

Then a suitably sized hotel had to be found and the Marriott Hotel was eventually chosen. Then the next task was to choose commemorative items to be approved by the Board. A national Knights competition was arranged to design a new centenary Knights tie. Eventually the new tie, T shirts, Mugs, lapel Pins, Cufflinks etc were agreed, commissioned and went on sale.

A commemorative book was planned and designed to show the history of the Knights, and this led to many hours searching through the archive. The Fraternal Cross was sent around the Order in the last year as we led up to the main celebration. Local Councils and Provinces across the Order arranged their own unique celebrations and Masses.

On 5th-11th June 2019 to coincide with Saint Columba’s feast day, one hundred people went on a Pilgrimage to the Island of Iona in Scotland to celebrate the Centenary. They visited the Abbey that St Columba founded after he landed at Iona, aged 44, on the eve of Pentecost, 12th May in the year 563 with his twelve companions.

Just before the Supreme Council Meeting, the Board of Directors visited the grave of our Founder PJ O’ Callaghan.

Archbishop Malcolm our Ecclesiastical Advisor opened the Centenary Supreme Council and read a framed Apostolic Blessing the Holy Father Pope Francis to us on the Knights Centenary. The Blessing read…. ‘The Holy Father Francis cordially imparts the requested Apostolic Blessing on the Knights of Saint Columba of Scotland, England and Wales on the occasion of their Centenary, invoking the intercession of the Virgin Mary and an abundance of Divine Grace. 1919-2019 Charity, Unity and Fraternity’.

The main Centenary Celebration was extremely well attended with many Brothers and their families, plus special guests and dignitaries.

We are so grateful to everyone that supported our Centenary celebrations including Sancta Familia, who videoed some of our key Centenary events. You can see these videos of our celebrations by clicking on the link below.
