Crib at Manchester International Airport

The Knights of St Columba is the largest Catholic family fraternal service organization in the UK with eight thousand members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.

The work of the knights is carried out at both a local and national level. The KSC's successful national 'Wells for Water' campaign, which raised £277.000 over three years was followed by a Project to support the 'Help the Hospices' movement over two years which raised in excess of £109,000. The current National Action Project known as 'Partners for Health' will run until 2005. In conjunction with CAFOD and SCIAF, the KSC will raise funds for health projects in the developing countries.

Locally, the Knights of St Columba undertake various activities to provide support and assistance to their Communities, families, the young and the Church. Such service can range from providing financial support for good causes; sponsoring sporting activities for the youth or giving freely of their time and energy to enhance the spiritual well-being of the local community by distributing posters; erecting Christmas cribs in prominent places (such as the one above at Manchester International Airport); organising seminars on social teaching; vocation exhibitions and adopting a moral stance on life issues.

HYP 2000 PilgrimageThose less fortunate in society, such as the disabled, those with learning difficulties and the homeless, also benefit from KSC action. Many Councils support such groups by providing help with transportation and travel arrangements, accommodation, running 'soup kitchens' and offering advice to those in need. The members of the Province carry out an extensive range of action in their local councils and at a Provincial level.
