For a number of years,
many well intentioned Knights of St Columba had nursed a desire to
establish some form of meeting place in the Metropolis; where Knight
could meet Knight; where Knights and their wives, family and friends
could stay when visiting or passing through the city; and would also
feature as the Catholic social centre in London.
The dream was realised
in 1947, when the former town residence of South African financier, Sir
Edmund Davis, at No 11 Lansdowne Road, Holland Park, London, was
purchased. Following modifications; the K.S.C. CLUB, which was
described as "The Finest Catholic Club in the Country", was
opened by the Cardinal Griffin, Archbishop of Westminster. Two years
later, the Extension was opened by His Grace Archbishop Godfrey,
Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain.
The previous owner had
spared no expense in furnishing and equipping the property. Several
varieties of marble featured in the Porch, Entrance Hall, Staircase and
various fireplaces. The "Adam" and "Conder" rooms
were considered to be architectural gems; and the "Silk" room
with its lovely walls of watered silk, added charm and dignity to the
decorative scheme of the Club.
London's Rendezvous for
Knights truly described this centre of Catholic social activity. Once
established, the K.S.C. Club provided a welcome and much needed central
meeting place for a large number of Catholic societies, not only for
business meetings, but also for all kinds of social events. Besides the
personal amenities, the Club possessed excellent and unsurpassed
facilities for the celebration of special occasions; Birthdays,
Anniversaries, Jubilees, Wedding Receptions, Council Dinners, Banquets
and Balls. Unfortunately, with the rising costs of refurbishment, high
overheads and a decline business, due in part to the lack of parking
facilities; the KSC Club was closed in 1983 and the property sold. A sad
ending to the Knight's 'London Rendezvous'.
