The Knights of St Columba is the largest Catholic family fraternal service organization in the UK with six thousand members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.

The work of the knights is carried out at both a local and national level. In recent years, the KSC's National Action Projects have raised in excess of £500,000 for successful campaigns to support 'Wells for Water' in Africa, the 'Help the Hospices' movement and 'Partners for Health' which ran until 2005. The current National Action Project known as 'Unsung Heroes' will run until 2008. In conjunction with the Samaritans, the Knights of St Columba have launched a life-saving partnership, through a three-year fundraising scheme.

Locally, the Knights of St Columba undertake various activities to provide support and assistance to the Community at large, families, the young and  the Church. Such service can range from providing financial support for 'good causes' or sponsoring sporting activities for the youth. Knights give freely of their time and energy to enhance the spiritual well-being of the local community; distributing posters; erecting Christmas cribs in prominent places; organising seminars on social teaching; vocation exhibitions and  adopting a moral stance on life issues. 

Those less fortunate in society, such as the disabled, those with learning difficulties, special needs and the homeless, also benefit from KSC action. Many Councils support such groups by providing help with transport and travel arrangements, accommodation, running 'soup kitchens' and offering advice to those in need.
